much bound up with Cavalieri's opinionated psyche and an emotional slave to him. He en-
"With your beautiful eyes I see a gentle light, which my blind eyes can see no longer. Your feet assist me to bear a load which my crippled feet can support no longer. I feel, that through your mind, I am raised to heaven. My will is centered in your will. My thoughts are formed in your heart and my words in your breath, abandoned to myself, I am like the moon, which is invisible in the sky as long as the sun shines."
Michelangelo's gay affairs and relationships ignited many attacks on him by religious zealots and fueled the intrigues of his enemies. Fortunately, 16th-century Italy was dominated by secularism. The Church hierarchy was preoccupied with materialism and had little interest in the idiosyncrasies of doctrine. Both the Vatican and several powerful feudal families were stampeding. for the vast wealth suddenly pouring into the peninsula as a result of the efficient and rapidly growing Italian merchant class. Ascetics and conservatives such as the reformer Savonarola were squelched.
Thus the leading criticism leveled by the Pope against Michelangelo's work was not that it was shockingly bold and sensuous, but that the master did not use "richer colors and plenty of gold." (Michelangelo had insisted "The men of that time were poor and did not wear gold jewelry.")
lifetime
During his Michelangelo made no effort to disguise his gayness or feign heterosexuality. His life-style was well-known to his contemporaries and his clearly homophilic sonnets were widely circulated during and after his lifetime. So overt was his sexual orientation that most biographers make not even the feeblest attempt to establish his heterosexuality and generally avoid his sex life altogether. Most people touring the Vatican perceive The Creation of Adam in terms of a wise "Godfather Time" figure and some vague anatomical classical symbol (and this is, no doubt, how most tour guides explain it), but few are aware of the sentiments operating behind that highly personal fresco:
"If a chaste love, if a superior devotion, if an equal fortune exist between two lovers, if cruel fate in striking one strikes the other, if a single mind, if a single will governs two hearts, if a soul in two bodies has become. eternal, bearing both to heaven on the same wings, if Cupid with a single golden shaft pierces and burns the heart of both at once, if one loves the other and neither loves himself, if both centre their pleasure and their joy in attaining the same end, if a thousand thousand loves are not a hundredth part of the love and faith which binds them, could a movement of vexation ever shatter and untie such a bond?"
